The Fellowship
Develop media skills while telling stories with and for your community.
Our reporting fellowship program is for emerging creative professionals who are interested in improving their skills in community media and civic leadership. The 16-week program specifically supports Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ people, age 18-25. As a fellow, you will develop your interviewing, researching, writing, photo, video and audio skills through hands-on reporting work exploring a topic relevant to the day-to-day lives of communities in and around New Orleans.
Fellowship Overview
Duration: 16 weeks
Time Commitment: 10 hours per week
Stipend: $2,000, plus $500 transportation assistance
Our reporting fellowship is a paid multimedia journalism experience for creative professionals, age 18-25, in New Orleans (Fellows), to work alongside experienced journalists, photojournalists and filmmakers. Fellows are paid a $2,000 stipend for a 16 week / 10-hour per week time commitment, including:
Twice-weekly team meetings; and
Independent and group-led fieldwork.
In addition, Fellows must attend a 1.5-day training camp to be held prior to the start of the fellowship.
The Spring 2024 fellowship will involve two core projects:
Production of a multimedia journalism project exploring a topic relevant to local communities underrepresented in local media; AND
Production of a live, in-person multimedia storytelling event as a capstone to the fellowship’s reporting work.
Group Reporting Project
Fellows will work with their cohort to do multimedia reporting on a topic relevant to residents in a New Orleans community that is underrepresented in local media. Fellows will learn how to work with a team to develop an editorial project; get hands-on practice researching and interviewing; and practice storytelling through writing, photograpy, audio and short documentary.
The reporting theme of the Spring 2024 fellowship will be assigned by Lede New Orleans staff, based on surveys and input from fellowship alumni and community members. We are also seeking a media partner to publish the completed reporting package. Work for both projects will be completed by the end of the fellowship program, with project deadlines throughout the 16-week fellowship.
This is a unique opportunity to develop skills in a hands-on environment and to build connections in the New Orleans media community and the community at large. All participants are encouraged to think creatively about how to make media that serves and empowers a diverse and increasingly mobile, digitally-focused audience.
Lede New Orleans is committed to building an inclusive and equitable local journalism community. Participants can expect to have a thoughtful dialogue about representation in media and how journalism and media can better serve and reflect the community.
Participating Fellows will leave the experience with work to add to their portfolio.
